Which Exit Should You Take in a Seoul Subway Station

고독한 여행가Admin· 9 viewsWritten in Korean

Have you reached your station but felt unsure which stairs to take? In Seoul, noting the exit number as well as the station name can make finding your way easier. Different exits from the same station may lead to different sides of a road or different streets, so check the walking route to your destination above ground. Line numbers and exit numbers mean different things. Line 4 is the subway line you ride, while Exit 1 is an entrance or exit connecting the station to the outside. The archive photograph shows Exit 1 at Myeongdong Station on Seoul Subway Line 4. Save the station name, line, and exit together rather than remembering only a number. Before setting off, find the exact address of your café or accommodation on a map. If the directions include an exit number, save it with the station name and check the walk from that exit to your destination. The Seoul Government's guide introduces the Seoul Subway app, which provides directions inside stations and exit locations as well as routes. After leaving the train, look for ‘출구’ or ‘Exit’ and follow the arrows for the number you need. If you are changing trains, follow the transfer signs for your next line instead. First distinguish the way outside from the way to another train. If a sign is confusing, pause somewhere that does not block other passengers. If you have a suitcase or stroller, check elevator locations too. You may need to change elevators between street level, the concourse, and the platform. Elevator placement in older stations may not be intuitive, so consult the station's facilities information rather than assuming it follows the same route as a staircase exit. To ask for help, show your destination on your phone and say, ‘여기 가려면 몇 번 출구로 나가야 하나요?’ (Which exit should I take to get here?). If you need an elevator, add ‘엘리베이터는 어디에 있나요?’ (Where is the elevator?). If you are already outside, start by checking your current location and the direction of your destination on the map. When meeting a friend, agree on the station, exit number, and whether to meet inside or outside the exit. Follow on-site information about the current status of exits and facilities.
