How Do You Move in Yutnori Without Dice?
You are spending time with Korean friends when someone takes out four wooden sticks instead of dice. A game of yutnori may be about to begin! If it is new to you, you might wonder, “There are no numbers—how do we know how far to move?” Let us focus on enjoying your first turn together rather than mastering complicated strategies. The first two pictures are original AI-generated illustrations, not real photographs. The decorative board in the first picture is not an exact rules diagram. Boards ①–③ are original, directly authored diagrams explaining basic movement.
Follow the pictures • Stick chart: from top to bottom, do, gae, geol, yut and mo. The number is how many spaces to move. An X-marked face is flat; the circular arrow means throw again. Yutnori is a traditional Korean game in which you move pieces around a board according to the way the sticks land. The familiar long wooden sticks have one flat side and one rounded side. The combination of upward-facing sides determines do, gae, geol, yut or mo. You do not read numbers printed on the sticks. The basic moves are do: one space; gae: two; geol: three; yut: four; and mo: five. One flat side facing up means do, two mean gae, three mean geol and four mean yut. If all four rounded sides face up, it is mo. For your first game, you could keep these five names and their movement counts beside the board. A yut or mo gives you another throw. There is also eopgi—stacking your own team's pieces so they move together—and japgi, landing on a space occupied by an opponent's piece to capture it. The basic aim is to be the first side to get all four of its pieces off the board. Discuss which piece to move with your teammates.
• Board ①: start at the lower-right flag and follow the outer route up the right edge, left across the top, down the left edge and right along the bottom toward the start.
• Board ②: the red dashed circle is the current position. For gae, exclude that position and count the next spaces: 1, 2.
• Board ③: a piece already stopped exactly at the upper-right corner can enter the diagonal shortcut on its next move. This example uses geol to move three spaces to the center. Simply passing a corner does not let you turn onto the shortcut there. The three boards show separate situations. Agree detailed finishing and baekdo rules before you play. This introduction is not a tournament rulebook covering every situation. Before starting, check whether you will use baekdo, which moves a piece back one space, and what happens if sticks land outside the agreed throwing area. If a rule is unfamiliar, ask “이번 판은 어떻게 해요?”—“How are we playing this round?” It helps to hear the group's agreed rules first. If you are still learning Korean, prepare two phrases: “처음이라 알려 주세요”—“It is my first time; please show me”—and “제가 던져도 돼요?”—“May I throw?” Counting “한 칸, 두 칸”—“one space, two spaces”—together is a little language practice, too. Choose a spot well clear of nearby objects, and never throw the sticks toward people. Would you stack your pieces to move quickly together, or spread them out and watch for opportunities? It is fine if you do not know the rules yet. Tell us on KFANZIP the name of a board game you enjoy with friends or family in your country.
